Healthy Futures for Children—Los Pipitos
For the past three years Disarm has been working in partnership with the Los Pipitos Foundation. The leading community-based center for children with developmental disabilities in Nicaragua, Los Pipitos provides services for 14,000 families (75,000 people) spread over more than half of Nicaragua’s 140 municipalities. Since 2007 Disarm has sent teams of occupational therapists, speech therapists and graduate students from Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor and Columbia Universities to offer advanced training to the dedicated staff at Los Pipitos. These collaborations enable Los Pipitos to better assess behavioral and language abilities, provide state-of-the-art treatment, and to share essential skills for family members.
