Shades of Vietnam?
Our nation has embarked on a dangerous, ill-conceived military occupation in Afghanistan without clearly defined goals or a viable strategy. The parallels to Vietnam are obvious: the “enemy” is elusive. The local population is neutral, if not hostile. And the Karzai government is corrupt with virtually no domestic
support.
The cost has been enormous and is growing by the day. Since 2001, more than 850 Americans have been killed in combat, and military operations alone have cost U.S. taxpayers $230 billion.
After eight long years of fighting in there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. There are currently 62,000 Americans and 39,000 NATO forces in Afghanistan. But the Pentagon wants even more – they’re requesting 40,000 additional combat troops.
As President Obama debates our nation’s future in Afghanistan – an issue that will define his presidency at home and abroad – a -growing majority of Americans now consider our presence in Afghanistan a mistake.
It’s time to tell Congress NO to another troop surge and
NO more funding for the war in Afghanistan.
We need an exit strategy and a timetable for withdrawal. Join Disarm today in calling for an end to a war that has no end in sight and continues to drain our economy, destroy lives and destabilizes the Middle East and South Asia. Write your member of Congress to support H.R. 2404, legislation introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), which would require the Obama Administration to present an exit strategy for Afghanistan.
